Firefly Films - Holy Days

15 April 2025

A significant milestone for Kōawa Studios with the first commercial use of our studios for Firefly’s international feature film Holy Days.

HOW TO APPLY

Kōawa Studios has celebrated a major milestone with the successful completion of its first commercial project: the international feature film Holy Days. A New Zealand–Canadian co-production, Holy Days wrapped filming in late 2024 and features an acclaimed cast including Judy Davis, Miriam Margolyes, and Jacki Weaver.

Based on the beloved novel by Dame Joy Cowley, Holy Days marks the feature directorial debut of renowned Canadian-South African actress Nat Boltt (Riverdale, District 9), who also wrote the screenplay and appears in the film.

Produced by Firefly Films, the production brought over 60 crew members to Kōawa Studios, making full use of its comprehensive facilities. From production offices to the art department’s mill and workshop, the studio provided a seamless environment for both pre-production and filming. A key highlight of the shoot was the inaugural use of Kōawa Studios’ cutting-edge virtual production soundstage, which hosted several pivotal scenes.

“The Kōawa Studios team ensured a seamless shoot on the volume stage, and the outcome was incredible—the footage looks fantastic,” - Emma Slade, Producer, Firefly Films.

In addition to production, Kōawa Studios provided office space for Firefly Films' not-for-profit education and mentoring organisation, Share the Knowledge, in collaboration with Kahurangi Toi Ātea. This initiative aims to develop skills for the New Zealand screen industry and create pathways into employment. Five Digital Screen students completed the Share the Knowledge course, and two outstanding students were selected as paid crew interns for the Holy Days shoot.

“It was awesome, I had the best time and learnt so much. Tony and the whole team were so great at teaching me about everything involved in the job. I can’t believe I had this opportunity, I feel very lucky.” - Daniel Davy UC Digital Screen Programme Student
