Our Name

Kōawa, a name gifted by Ngāi Tahu (the principal iwi (tribe) of the South Island and a key part of the wider Māori and Indigenous community of Aotearoa New Zealand), means “watercourse” or “channel.” It symbolises a life force that unites people, passion, and purpose. This metaphor beautifully captures how students and industry professionals engage at Kōawa, providing students with regular access and exposure to the industry. This connection is vital for their success, equipping them with the skills demanded by global screen and creative industries.

About the Region

The Canterbury region, known as Waitaha and "home to nature’s most diverse playground," boasts over 660,000 residents, making up 13% of New Zealand's population. At its heart lies Ōtautahi Christchurch, a city embraced by grassy plains, clear lakes, and snow-capped mountains.

Christchurch is a compact and easily accessible city, offering an ideal blend of productivity and quality of life. Kōawa Studios is conveniently located just 10-15 minutes from the CBD and 10 minutes from Christchurch Airport. The airport is serviced by 11 different airlines, providing over 320 flights each month to 10 international destinations. In 2021, Christchurch was honored as one of Time Magazine’s top 100 places to visit.

As the city with the second-largest tech sector in New Zealand, Christchurch contributes 17% of the country’s tech exports. It is also home to a significant portion of New Zealand’s hi-tech and specialist manufacturing firms, making it a hub of innovation and industry.
